What Is Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is a type of treatment which relies on the use of essential oils and other aromatic compounds. The practice may be used to relieve physical, emotional, or mental health issues. The term aromatherapy was coined by French chemist René Maurice Gattefossé in 1937. He created the word from the Greek “aroma” meaning “fragrance”, and “therapeia” meaning “cure”.

The theory behind aromatherapy suggests that various essential oils can reduce stress levels, promote relaxation, boost moods, improve sleep quality, ease pain related to headaches or arthritis among other things – all through their scent. Furthermore, it has been hypothesised that these scents work with one’s limbic system , which controls moods, emotion, and behaviour.

While aromatherapy is often used to reduce stress levels, many of its benefits are largely anecdotal. Scientific evidence supporting the use of these aromatic compounds for medicinal purposes has been somewhat limited – but with each passing year more research is published in peer-reviewed journals suggesting that some aromas do have physiological effects.

How Aromatherapy Can Affect Your Mental Health

The word “aromatherapy” is a portmanteau of the words aroma and therapy. It refers to the use of natural essential oils (highly concentrated, volatile plant compounds) for therapeutic purposes, including mood altering and/or physical well being. How does aromatherapy work? There are several ways that it can have an effect on your mental health:

Scent triggers the olfactory nerve located in your nose which then sends signals to your limbic system, an area of the brain associated with memory. This is why you might experience a flashback when smelling something familiar yet unpleasant.

When exposed to pleasant smells, your body experiences an emotional boost. How does this work? Well, consider this: during traumatic events the olfactory nerve in our nasal cavity becomes desensitized. This is the reason why you might not remember the smell of something that has hurt you.

Essential oils can boost your mood by stimulating areas in your brain which are responsible for endorphin productions, resulting in a general sense of relaxation and well being.

Making Aromatherapy Candles Step By Step

The quality of your candles, like most things, is heavily dependent on the quality of your ingredients. Fragrance varies by brand and purity, especially in the world of essential oils. So, if you haven’t had much success making candles that actually smell like anything, it’s possible that your ingredients are to blame.

Before you begin making candles, examine the quality of your ingredients to see what you can improve right away.

Step 1: Choose Soy Wax

Because essential oils are naturally less fragrant than chemical scents, you must select a wax that retains scents longer and slowly releases them into the air. So soy wax is recommended.

These scented candles are relatively simple to make in terms of ingredients. Soy wax flakes and essential oils are all that is required (plus your tools). Why is soy wax used? Soy wax candles burn cleaner, with less soot produced as the candle burns. They’re also non-toxic, which means they won’t emit toxins as they burn.

Soy wax melts quickly and is easy to handle; however, you’ll want to stir it with a disposable device because it sticks to everything and is difficult to remove once it’s set. I use a wooden chopstick that I can toss once I’m finished making candles.

Step 2: Mix Your Essential Oils To The Soy Wax

Aromatherapy candles are essential oil candles in disguise. You’ll need between 80 and 120 drops of essential oil. Yes, this appears to be a lot, but it is spread across four candles. The amount you use will be determined by the essential oils you select. Again, see this post for more information on the benefits of various essential oils. Feel free to mix and match as well! Simply add the oils to the melted soy wax.

Ingredients Of Aromatherapy Candles

Wicks for candles

1 oz. metal or glass container

2 cup flakes pure soy wax (add more as needed to fill your container)

An old aluminum can was used to melt wax.

To hold the wicks, use a clothespin or chopsticks.

2 teaspoons of your favorite essential oil

Detailed Instructions

Fill an old aluminum can halfway with soy wax flakes (if it doesn’t all fit, add as much as you can and add more as the wax melts).

Fill a saucepan halfway with water and center the can of soy wax. Allow the water to simmer until the wax completely melts.

Remove the can and dip a kitchen thermometer into the hot wax. Check the temperature every few minutes until the wax reaches 185 degrees (it doesn’t have to be exact, but a slightly lower temperature is preferable to a slightly higher temperature).

Stir in your essential oils to combine.

Place the wick in the center of the container and secure it with a clothespin or chopsticks.

Pour the wax into the container and set it aside to cool for several hours, if not overnight, before lighting it.
